Duct tape, also known synonymously as duck tape, is known for its many uses. These days, the motto seems to be "if it's broke duct tape can fix it." Many people abide by this motto, using duct tape for a variety of purposes such as to tape up windows, as material for dresses, and to remove warts.
There are three major types of duct tape that are available today. The most common type is the silver or gray colored tape. Other less common types include transparent and 3M adhesive tape. All of these kinds of duck tape have specific uses.
Silver is the first kind of duct tape to be invented. It was used in the military and even acquired a nickname, the 100 mph tape, due to its ability to maintain its adhesive in 100 mph winds. Silver tape is normally used for household problems such as leaky pipes, broken windows, and automotive repair. Other uncommon uses include clothing creations, accessory creations, and padding drums. In recent years, silver tape has become available in multiple colors such as lime green, red, yellow, and blue.
Transparent duct tape is a subset of the original. Transparent tape is known to last 6 times longer than silver tape, is easier to tear, and works well in extreme heat and UV conditions. It's also widely praised for it visibility, or rather, lack thereof. Transparent duct tape can be purchased at a variety of hardware stores including Ace Hardware and Menards, and is available in different thicknesses and lengths.
3M adhesive tape is the most advanced form of duct tape. It is lightweight, durable, and is said to have a stronger adhesive. Unlike other forms, 3M adhesive tape is used for less conventional projects. For instance, 3M adhesive tape has a double sided version. This is generally used to keep dresses and clothes from falling off and exposing people. It is durable enough and soft enough to stick to cloth without damaging it. It's also light weight enough that it doesn't weigh down the wearer.
All the different types of duck tape can be purchased at hardware stores including Ace Hardware and Menards, and large chain stores such as Target and Wal-Mart. The most common length is 1.88 in by 20 yards, and the most common brands are Scotch and Grangier. It can be purchased for approximately $5-$10, and a duck tape dispenser can also be purchased at these stores for as little as $4.
Duct tape can be used for just about anything these days, from making a prom dress to fixing a car window. Technology has made duct tape available in a variety of thickness, length, and color. This popular type of tape will surely expand even farther in the future, making lives less stressful and a little more colorful.
